Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis
Church · St. Louis, Missouri
A Catholic cathedral in the Central West End, completed in 1914 in a Byzantine and Romanesque revival style, holding what is generally described as the largest mosaic collection in the world - roughly 83,000 square feet of it, using around 41.5 million pieces of glass tesserae in more than 7,000 colours. The mosaics took some seventy-five years to install, finishing in 1988. Most visitors have no idea it is here until they walk in, and the reaction is reliably the same.
4431 Lindell Boulevard, St. Louis, Missouri, 63108, United States
Open daily for visitors, generally 7 AM to 5 PM, FREE to enter. IT IS A WORKING CATHEDRAL and access is restricted during Mass, weddings, funerals and ordinations - the schedule is published and it is worth checking, because a Saturday afternoon can be a wedding. The Mosaic Museum in the crypt keeps shorter hours and charges a small admission. Guided tours run on a posted schedule.
