Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart

National Register Of Historic Places · Newark, New Jersey

A French Gothic Revival cathedral in Newark that is ONE OF THE LARGEST IN NORTH AMERICA — twin spires of two hundred and thirty-two feet, a nave longer than Westminster Abbey's, and it took fifty-five years to build, from 1899 to 1954. The stained glass was made in Munich and there is a great deal of it. POPE JOHN PAUL II PRAYED HERE IN 1995 and Luciano Pavarotti sang in it the same year. IT IS FREE, IT IS OPEN, AND ALMOST NOBODY GOES — which is the recurring fact about Newark. Branch Brook Park beside it holds more cherry trees than Washington DC.
