Cathedral of Learning
Tower · Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
A forty-two-storey Late Gothic Revival skyscraper built for the University of Pittsburgh between 1926 and 1937, and the tallest educational building in the Western Hemisphere. Its ground floor is a vaulted stone hall four storeys high that is used as an ordinary student study space, which means undergraduates sit doing coursework in what looks like the nave of a cathedral. Around it are the Nationality Rooms — thirty-odd classrooms each designed and paid for by one of Pittsburgh's immigrant communities in its own national style, and each of them a working classroom rather than a display.
4200 Fifth Avenue, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 15260, United States
The Commons Room is FREE and open whenever the building is, generally daytime and evening on weekdays with reduced weekend hours. The Nationality Rooms are on a ticketed self-guided audio tour from the ground-floor office; ACCESS DEPENDS ON THE TEACHING SCHEDULE and many rooms are locked during term-time class hours. Weekends and university breaks are when most rooms are open. Decorated for the season from late November to early January.
