An outdoor place of worship on a pine-covered hilltop in Rindge, in the Monadnock Region of southern New Hampshire, with rows of wooden benches under tall pines facing an open altar and, beyond it, the long blue profile of the mountain to the northwest. Douglas and Sibyl Sloane created it after World War II in memory of their son Sanderson, a bomber pilot killed over Europe in 1944, who had picked this hill as the place he hoped to build a home. It is non-denominational and open to people of every faith or none. The Altar of the Nation, built of stones sent from every state and from places around the world, was recognised by Congress as a national memorial to all American war dead (confirm the year). The stone Memorial Bell Tower honours American women who served their country, and small chapels, gardens and a museum in the family's house stand along the paths. Services, memorial days and weddings are held here through the warm months, entry is free and upkeep relies on donations.

The grounds are open in the warm season only, roughly from May to the end of October, daily from morning to early evening (confirm current dates and hours). They are closed to visitors through the winter, when the hilltop is under snow and the road and paths are not kept clear. The gift shop and museum keep shorter hours and may open only on some days early and late in the season. Weddings, memorial services and scheduled worship close the main sanctuary or other areas for an hour or more, mostly on Saturday and Sunday; the rest of the grounds stay open. Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies draw large crowds (confirm whether Veterans Day falls inside the season).
