Cathedral State Park
Nature Preserve · Aurora, West Virginia
A hundred and thirty acres of old-growth eastern hemlock on US Route 50 at Aurora — the last substantial stand of virgin hemlock left in West Virginia and one of the last anywhere in the eastern United States. It survived because Branson Haas, who owned it, refused to sell to the loggers who took everything around it and deeded it to the state in 1942. It is a National Natural Landmark and the trails through it are flat, short and free.
