Catoctin Mountain Park
National Park Service Unit · Thurmont, Maryland
Six thousand acres of hardwood forest on the Catoctin ridge above Thurmont, protected in the 1930s as a New Deal recreation project on land that had been logged to exhaustion for charcoal. Quartzite outcrops along the crest give the only real views in this part of Maryland, and a reconstructed Prohibition-era whiskey still sits in a hollow below them. Camp David is somewhere inside the park; it is not open, not marked, and not discussed.
6602 Foxville Road, Thurmont, Maryland, 21788, United States
FREE and open daily, dawn to dusk, year round. The visitor centre keeps daytime hours with a reduced week in winter. Camping is seasonal and booked in advance. ⚠ CAMP DAVID IS INSIDE THIS PARK, IS NOT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, AND IS NOT SHOWN ON PARK MAPS — the area around it is closed and patrolled, and roads and trails near it can close without notice or explanation, particularly when the President is in residence. Do not plan a route on the assumption that a trail will be open.
