Cave of the Mounds

National Natural Landmark · Blue Mounds, Wisconsin

A limestone cave in the Driftless Area near Blue Mounds, opened accidentally on 4 August 1939 when a quarry blast took the roof off a chamber nobody knew was there. Quarrying stopped permanently that day and the cave opened to the public the following May. It is not large — roughly 1,692 feet of passage, Wisconsin's fifth-longest cave — but it is unusually richly decorated, with stalactites, flowstone and helictites in a compact space, and the Department of the Interior designated it a National Natural Landmark in 1987.
