Cavendish Beach, Prince Edward Island National Park

A Long Red Sand Beach With Dunes, Boardwalks And Warm Shallow Water On The North Shore Of PEI, Part Of The National Park Beside Green Gables And The Cavendish Resort Strip. The Island'S Best Known Family Beach, Busy In July And August · Cavendish, Prince Edward Island

Cavendish Beach lies on the north shore of Prince Edward Island, about 40 km north-west of Charlottetown, inside the Cavendish section of Prince Edward Island National Park. A long sweep of red-orange sand runs between low sandstone cliffs and dunes held by marram grass, with shallow warm water by Atlantic standards and long boardwalks that cross the dunes to the shore. It is the island's best-known family beach, sitting beside the Green Gables heritage site and the busy Cavendish resort strip with its cafes, amusement parks and cottages. July and August bring crowds, lifeguards and beach snack bars. Spring and autumn are quieter, with wind, empty sand and big skies. Dune areas protect nesting shorebirds such as the piping plover, so fences and signs are to be followed closely. The park also has campgrounds, cycling paths and a short walk to the sandstone cliffs, making it easy to spend a whole day or two here rather than only an afternoon, with the red sand at its richest colour near sunset.

The beach is open at any hour and has no gate, though lifeguards and beach services keep a short season, roughly late June to late August, with guards on duty about mid-morning to late afternoon - confirm exact dates and zones with the park. Washrooms, change rooms and snack bars follow the same summer pattern. Parks Canada visitor services in the Cavendish area open roughly late May or June to October, with fewer days at the edges. Outside summer the beach stays open but unsupervised, with chilly water and winds. Sunset is the busiest evening hour in July, so the lot can fill ahead of it.
