Caverns of Sonora

Show Cave · Sonora, Texas

A National Natural Landmark on I-10 in the emptiest part of West Texas, and by the reckoning of people who study caves for a living, one of the most beautiful in the world. Its distinction is helictites — calcite crystals that grow sideways and upward against gravity — present here in an abundance, purity and complexity found almost nowhere else. More than 95 per cent of its formations are still actively growing. The founder of the National Speleological Society said its beauty could not be exaggerated, even by Texans.
