Cayo Jutias and Cayo Levisa
The Two North Coast Keys Off Pinar Del Rio, One Reached By Causeway As A Day Trip And One By Boat With The Only Accommodation, Both The Beach Half Of A Vinales Visit · Vinales, Pinar del Rio
Vinales is a valley, and sooner or later everyone staying in it wants the sea. These are the two answers, ninety minutes apart and quite different from each other. Cayo Jutias is reached by driving out along a causeway through mangrove to a key with white sand, shallow turquoise water, starfish lying in the shallows and a rusting iron lighthouse at the far end - a day trip, with a beach bar and nothing else, and everybody gone by dusk. Cayo Levisa needs a boat from Palma Rubia, half an hour across, and has the only accommodation on this coast: a row of cabins behind the beach, a dive centre working a reef a short ride offshore, and the particular quiet of an island where the last boat has left. Hemingway is supposed to have fished here, which is said of a good deal of this coastline. Both are about ninety minutes from Vinales and both cost a fraction of what Varadero charges for water that is at least as good - the only real decision is whether you want a day out or a night away.

BOTH DEPEND ON FUEL and on the causeway and jetty being intact.
