Cayo Largo del Sur

A Twenty Five Kilometre Resort Key In The Canarreos Archipelago With Its Own International Airport, No Permanent Civilian Population And A Turtle Nesting Programme · Cayo Largo, Isla de la Juventud

Cayo Largo is twenty-five kilometres of white sand in the Canarreos archipelago, administered as part of the Isla de la Juventud special municipality and otherwise sharing nothing with it. It has its own airport taking international charters, a line of all-inclusive hotels, no town, and no permanent civilian population beyond the people who work there. Playa Sirena, the wide west-facing beach at the end of the key, turns up regularly on lists of the best beaches in the Caribbean and deserves to. Green and loggerhead turtles nest along these beaches through the summer, with a small hatchery you can visit, and iguanas hold a key of their own nearby. The honest thing to say is that you can fly in, spend a fortnight and go home without having seen Cuba at all. Whether that is the attraction or the objection is a matter of taste, but it should be a decision rather than a surprise on arrival, and pairing the key with a week in Havana or Trinidad costs very little extra.

Resorts run year round and the beaches are open at all times. DIRECT INTERNATIONAL CHARTER FLIGHTS land on the key itself; there is no scheduled connection to Nueva Gerona and the crossing from the mainland is not a normal route. The turtle hatchery and the boat excursions keep daytime hours. TURTLE NESTING RUNS ROUGHLY MAY TO SEPTEMBER. Resorts run generators.
