Cedarburg

Heritage District · Cedarburg, Wisconsin

A mill town twenty minutes north of Milwaukee built by German immigrants in the 1840s out of local limestone and cream city brick, which survived because the mills closed early and nobody had the money to knock anything down. Washington Avenue is a mile of intact nineteenth-century commercial buildings, and the 1864 woollen mill at the top of it is now the Cedar Creek Settlement — shops, a winery and a restaurant inside the original stone. Wisconsin's last remaining original covered bridge stands a few miles north of the town.

W62N588 Washington Avenue, Cedarburg, Wisconsin, 53012, United States

The town is open at all hours. Shops and the Cedar Creek Settlement generally run late morning to around 17:00, with several closing Mondays and shorter winter hours. Covered Bridge Park is open daily and free. Festival weekends in June and September bring road closures and very heavy crowds.
