Celebration Park

Rock Art · Melba, Idaho

Idaho's only archaeological park, established in 1989 on the Snake River near Melba and run by Canyon County. The ground is covered in melon gravel - rounded basalt boulders that a catastrophic flood dumped here when Lake Bonneville broke through its rim about fifteen thousand years ago - and a great many of those boulders carry petroglyphs, some as recent as a century old and some as much as ten thousand years old. The Guffey Railroad Bridge crosses the Snake at the edge of the park, and the trail beyond it runs upstream toward Halverson Lake.

Open year round during daylight hours. ⚠ A MODEST COUNTY CHARGE OR DONATION APPLIES and this is CANYON COUNTY, NOT IDAHO STATE PARKS - a state park passport buys you nothing here, which catches people out. THE VISITOR CENTRE AND STAFFED INTERPRETIVE PROGRAMMES KEEP LIMITED AND SEASONAL HOURS and the atlatl range needs a staffed day for equipment - ring ahead if either matters, because the site is self-guided the rest of the time. ⚠ THERE IS NO SHOP, NO CONCESSION AND ALMOST NO SHADE; bring all the water you need. Petroglyphs are legally protected: do not touch, chalk or make rubbings, and stay on the marked trails through the boulder fields.
