Central Park
City Park · New York, New York
Eight hundred and forty-three acres between 59th and 110th Streets, laid out from 1858 by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux on ground that was swamp, rock outcrop and the displaced village of Seneca Village. Almost nothing in it is natural: the lakes are engineered, the Ramble is a designed wilderness, and the transverse roads were sunk below sight-line so that traffic could cross without ever appearing in the landscape.
