Central Shaheed Minar

Memorial · Dhaka, Dhaka

The Language Martyrs' memorial beside Dhaka Medical College: Hamidur Rahman's composition of white columns - the bowed mother and her fallen sons - honouring those killed on 21 February 1952 defending Bangla's status, the wound from which the nation's road to 1971 is traced. The first minar, raised within days of the shootings, was demolished; the present structure was completed after independence in 1972 and is the template for the replica minars in towns across the country and Bengali communities worldwide. On Ekushey - now UNESCO's International Mother Language Day - the barefoot midnight processions here are the national year's most solemn choreography.
