Cesar E. Chavez National Monument
National Monument · Keene, California
Cesar E. Chavez National Monument is in Keene, in the Tehachapi Mountains of Kern County, on the grounds of Nuestra Senora Reina de la Paz, known as La Paz, where the farmworker and labor leader Cesar Chavez lived and worked from 1971 until his death in 1993. The site, about 116 acres, was the headquarters of the United Farm Workers. It holds a visitor center with a museum, his preserved office, a memorial garden with his gravesite and a rose garden for his wife Helen Chavez, and historic buildings from the campus - confirm which are open. The National Park Service runs the monument, and entry is free - confirm. This is a quiet, reflective place, not a spectacle: expect an hour or two of reading, listening and walking. The location is rural, summer can be hot, and winter brings occasional snow. Tehachapi and Bakersfield are the nearest towns, and the drive in is winding. Plan one to two hours.
29700 Woodford-Tehachapi Road, Keene, California, 93531, United States
The monument is normally open daily from about 10 AM to 4 PM, and it is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day - confirm the current hours with the National Park Service before you drive, as hours and some building access can change with staffing and season. Entry is free, and there is no entrance gate or fee. The visitor center, memorial garden and grounds may have different opening times, and some historic buildings are open only for tours or on set days. Winter snow or ice on mountain roads can delay or close the site, and heat or fire danger may limit time outdoors in summer. Call or check the NPS page first, as mobile coverage in the canyon is weak.
