Chadburn Lake and the Whitehorse Trails make up the natural area on the edge of the capital, along the Yukon River valley south-east of downtown and reached by the Chadburn Lake Road (confirm where the pavement ends). Here a small lake, forest paths, river bluffs and aspen stands sit a few minutes from the shops, and locals treat the area as their back garden for dog walks, mountain biking, paddling and cross-country skiing. The road continues along Schwatka Lake, the reservoir behind the Whitehorse dam, and passes trailheads that wander through spruce, willow and birch to viewpoints over the river. Fall brings gold aspen, winter brings groomed ski and fat bike tracks (confirm), and spring brings migrating swans and ducks. It is an easy, free escape for visitors who have a free afternoon in town and want fresh air without a long drive. Facilities are simple, so bring your own water and snacks.
