Chain of Rocks Bridge

Historic Bridge · Granite City, Illinois

A mile-long bridge of 1929 that carried Route 66 across the Mississippi from 1936 until 1965, and which turns twenty-two degrees in the middle of the river — a bend built into the deck because the piers had to align with the shipping channel and the bluffs would not cooperate. It closed to traffic in 1968, stood derelict for thirty years and reopened in 1999 as a footbridge, which is now the only way across it.

Chain of Rocks Road, Granite City, Illinois, 62040, United States
