Chamizal National Memorial

Memorial · El Paso, Texas

A National Park Service site on the El Paso riverfront commemorating something almost unheard of — a hundred-year border dispute between the United States and Mexico settled by negotiation rather than force. The Rio Grande shifted south across the 1800s, moving about six hundred acres of Mexico onto the American side, and the 1963 Chamizal Convention finally divided it, moved the river into a concrete channel and left this park where the argument had been.

⚠ HOURS AND ANY FEES ARE NOT STATED HERE — I could not verify them. Check nps.gov/cham before travelling; NPS memorials of this kind are typically free, but visitor centre hours across the system have been affected by staffing. ⚠ THE OUTDOOR THEATRE PROGRAMMES BORDER MUSIC, DANCE AND THEATRE YEAR-ROUND, separately ticketed — check the events calendar, because a performance night is the better visit.
