Champoeg State Heritage Area

Historic Site · Aurora, Oregon

Six hundred and fifteen acres on the south bank of the Willamette between Portland and Salem, on the site of a town that no longer exists. On 2 May 1843 a meeting here voted narrowly - fifty-two to fifty - to form a provisional government, the first American-style government on the Pacific coast, some years before the United States had any legal claim to the territory. The town itself was destroyed by the Willamette flood of 1861 and never rebuilt.
