Chandigarh
Union Territory And Shared Capital Of Punjab And Haryana; The Capitol Complex Is Part Of The UNESCO World Heritage Site The Architectural Work Of Le Corbusier (2016) · Chandigarh, Chandigarh
A planned city at the foot of the Shivalik hills, designed from scratch after independence to replace Lahore, lost to Pakistan, as Punjab's capital, and laid out by the Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier and his team in the 1950s. It is a grid of numbered sectors, broad roads, green belts and raw concrete, and it is now the shared capital of Punjab and Haryana. Its heart is the Capitol Complex, with the High Court, the Secretariat, the Legislative Assembly and the Open Hand monument, part of a World Heritage listing of Le Corbusier's work across three continents; it can be visited on guided tours with ID. The other famous sight is the opposite of planning: the Rock Garden, a sprawling fantasy of sculptures made from broken crockery, tiles and waste, built in secret by a road inspector, Nek Chand, on government land and legalised after it was found. Sukhna Lake, the Rose Garden and the Pierre Jeanneret museum complete the picture. Chandigarh is clean, green and orderly by Indian standards, and the gateway to Shimla and the hills.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED; confirm tour times and closures. The usual pattern: the Capitol Complex is visited only by guided tour at set times on working days, with registration and photo ID at the tourism office; tours can be suspended for legislative sessions, VIP visits or security. The Rock Garden opens daily from morning to evening, with longer hours in summer. The Government Museum and the Le Corbusier and Jeanneret museums keep daytime hours and close one day a week, commonly Monday. Sukhna Lake and the Rose Garden are open all day. Main traps: turning up at the Capitol without ID or on a closed day, the Rock Garden at weekend midday, and winter fog wrecking travel plans.
