Chania Old Town and Venetian Harbour
Venetian And Ottoman Harbour Town Of Western Crete, With The Sixteenth Century Lighthouse, The Firka Fortress, The Kucuk Hasan Mosque And The Venetian Arsenals · Chania, Crete
Chania, on the north coast of western Crete, is widely thought to be the island's most beautiful town: a curving Venetian harbour lined with pastel houses, a breakwater leading to a sixteenth-century lighthouse, and behind it a tight maze of lanes where Venetian palazzi, Ottoman houses with wooden balconies, minarets and churches stand side by side. The town was Crete's capital until 1971 and the place where union with Greece was proclaimed in 1913. Its sights are small and walkable: the Kucuk Hasan mosque on the waterfront, the vaulted Venetian arsenals, the Firka fortress and Maritime Museum, the Etz Hayyim synagogue, Splantzia square, the leather street and the Topanas quarter. It is also the base for the Samaria Gorge, Balos and Elafonisi, so most visitors stay two to four nights. The honest caveats: the harbour front is lined with touting restaurants of uneven quality, the lanes are very crowded on summer evenings, and the car-free centre means parking is a struggle.
