Chapultepec Park and Castle

Bosque Urbano / Museo Nacional De Historia (INAH) · Ciudad de México, Ciudad de México

The largest city park in Latin America, with some 686 hectares of woodland, lakes and museums in four sections, on a hill the Mexica called Chapultepec, grasshopper hill, and held sacred long before Cortes arrived. The castle on the summit was begun in 1785 as a viceregal residence, became the Military College where the Ninos Heroes died resisting the United States invasion in 1847, was remade as the imperial home of Maximilian and Carlota in the 1860s, and served as the presidential residence until 1939. It is now the National History Museum. Below it lie the National Museum of Anthropology, the Tamayo, the Museum of Modern Art, the zoo and Los Pinos, the former presidential complex. The park itself is free, the castle charges a modest fee and is closed on Mondays, and on Sundays most of Mexico City seems to be here, so go on Tuesday to Friday for calm, and bring a passport for ticket windows.
