Charleston City Market

Covered Market · Charleston, South Carolina

Four blocks of open-sided market sheds running from Meeting Street to East Bay, in use since the early 1800s and still the busiest single attraction in Charleston. It is where sweetgrass baskets are made and sold by Gullah Geechee weavers working in front of you, using a coiling technique carried from West Africa and practised here for more than three centuries. It is also the subject of the most persistent false story told about Charleston.

188 Meeting Street, Charleston, South Carolina, 29401, United States

FREE to walk. The market is open daily, generally from around 9:30 AM to 6 PM, with the enclosed Great Hall keeping its own hours and a NIGHT MARKET running on Friday and Saturday evenings from spring through December. Individual vendors set their own hours and the sheds thin out well before closing on a quiet day. Parking is in the surrounding paid garages, not on the street.
