Charleston Tea Garden
Working Farm · Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina
A working tea farm on Wadmalaw Island, one of very few commercial tea gardens in the United States, growing Camellia sinensis in long hedged rows on Sea Island soil. The factory tour is free and runs continuously; the trolley ride out through the fields is ticketed and short. It is a genuinely odd thing to find twenty-five minutes from Charleston, and the oddness is most of the appeal.
6617 Maybank Highway, Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina, 29487, United States
Open Monday to Saturday 10 AM to 4 PM and Sunday noon to 4 PM. THE FACTORY TOUR IS FREE and runs roughly every fifteen minutes. THE TROLLEY TOUR IS TICKETED, takes 35 to 40 minutes, and THE LAST TROLLEY IS AT 3:15 PM — arriving after that means no trolley at all. Booking the trolley more than 24 hours ahead is cheaper than booking inside 24 hours.
