Chateau de Mores State Historic Site
Historic House · Medora, North Dakota
The 26-room frame house the Marquis de Mores built above Medora in 1883 as a hunting lodge and summer home, still holding the family's own furniture, china, clothing and hunting gear rather than period substitutes. He was a French nobleman with a plan to slaughter cattle on the range and ship chilled beef east by rail; the plan failed within four years and the family left, but the house stayed shut up and intact. The site also holds the chimney of the packing plant and the de Mores Memorial Park in town.
3426 Chateau Road, Medora, North Dakota, 58645, United States
⚠ SEASONAL - generally open daily from mid-May to mid-September, roughly 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM, and closed for the winter. The house is seen on a guided tour only; a modest admission covers the tour and the interpretive centre. The packing plant chimney and the de Mores Memorial Park down in Medora are open all year and are free. The State Historical Society of North Dakota runs this site and its Bismarck head office number appears alongside the site's own; the Medora number is the one to ring.
