Chatsworth House is the Duke of Devonshire's country seat in the Derwent valley, and one of the grandest houses in England. The family has lived here since 1549, and the present building, mostly 17th and 18th century, holds painted ceilings, a sculpture gallery, a library and a collection of Old Master paintings in about 30 state rooms. It was Pemberley in the 2005 film of Pride and Prejudice. Outside, the garden has the Cascade, the Emperor Fountain, a maze and a kitchen garden, set in a Capability Brown park with deer and free walking. The farmyard and adventure playground are good for families, and the farm shop at Pilsley is worth a stop. Tickets are priced separately for house, garden and park, which makes a full visit expensive. The house is open only in the main season, and it is often crowded in summer and on school holidays. Without a car it is awkward to reach, since buses from Bakewell run less often than you might hope.
Chatsworth, Bakewell, Derbyshire, in the Peak District about 250 km north of London, Bakewell, England, United Kingdom
The house and garden are open on most days from about spring to the start of January, and are closed over the winter months except for Christmas events, so check the season carefully. Some days of the week can be closed in quieter months; confirm the calendar before you travel. Last entry is commonly an hour or two before closing, and the house closes earlier than the garden. The parkland is FREE to walk on public rights of way and is open at all hours. The house, garden, farmyard and playground need a ticket and are CLOSED when the estate shuts or in winter. The farm shop at Pilsley keeps its own hours. Confirm everything on the Chatsworth website.
