Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area
National Recreation Area · Sandy Springs, Georgia
Forty-eight miles of the Chattahoochee north of Atlanta, protected in fifteen separate land units rather than as one continuous park, which is the thing to understand before setting a satnav. It is the metro's river — people tube it, paddle it, fish it and run the riverside trails in numbers that no other National Park Service unit in Georgia comes close to. The water is released from the bottom of Lake Lanier through Buford Dam and stays cold all year, which is why it holds trout in Georgia and why people get into trouble in it in July.
1978 Island Ford Parkway, Sandy Springs, Georgia, 30350, United States
Land units generally open daily from dawn to dusk, year-round. A parking fee is charged per vehicle at most units and one payment covers all units for the day; federal passes accepted. The Island Ford visitor centre keeps weekday daytime hours. Tubing outfitters are seasonal. CHECK THE BUFORD DAM RELEASE SCHEDULE before any river activity.
