Chatuchak Weekend Market
One Of The World'S Largest Weekend Markets, With Thousands Of Stalls In Numbered Sections · Bangkok, Bangkok
Chatuchak Weekend Market, known to Bangkok simply as JJ, is one of the largest weekend markets in the world: thousands of stalls packed into a grid of covered lanes and numbered sections on the northern edge of central Bangkok, beside Chatuchak Park. The market began at Sanam Luang near the Grand Palace and moved here in the early 1980s, and it now draws huge crowds of Thais and visitors every Saturday and Sunday. Its sections roughly group clothing, vintage and second-hand goods, handicrafts, ceramics, home decor and furniture, art, books, antiques and collectables, pets and plants, and a clock tower at the centre is the traditional meeting point. Between the stalls are food carts selling coconut ice cream, fresh juices, pad thai, grilled meat and even giant pans of paella. It is hot, cramped and easy to get lost in, and best at opening. The Or Tor Kor fresh market stands across the road, and the green lawns of Chatuchak Park and Queen Sirikit Park lie alongside, all reached by BTS Mo Chit or the MRT at Chatuchak Park and Kamphaeng Phet.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the main market opens on Saturdays and Sundays only, from roughly 9 am to 6 pm, with many stalls opening late and closing early; it is closed Monday to Friday except for a Friday evening session, traditionally about 6 pm to midnight with part of the market trading, and a weekday plant and flower market, traditionally on Wednesdays and Thursdays in the daytime. There is no ticket and no last entry, but stalls start to pack up from about 5 pm. Or Tor Kor across the road opens daily from early morning. The traps that ruin a day are arriving at 1 pm in the heat and the crush, coming on a weekday expecting the full market, relying on a Friday session or plant market day that has changed, and taking a taxi into weekend traffic instead of the BTS or MRT. Confirm current times before relying on them.
