Chautauqua Institution
Resort Area · Chautauqua, New York
A gated 750-acre lakeside village in the far south-west corner of New York, founded in 1874 as a summer school for Sunday school teachers and now running a NINE-WEEK SUMMER SEASON of lectures, opera, symphony, theatre and worship. It gave its name to the Chautauqua movement that took travelling adult education across America, and it is a National Historic Landmark District of Victorian cottages with no real equivalent anywhere.
