Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

Giant Panda Breeding And Research Base (Founded 1987) · Chengdu, Sichuan

The world's best-known place to see giant pandas: a breeding and research base founded in 1987 on the northern edge of Chengdu with six pandas rescued from the wild, now a large, hilly bamboo park holding dozens of giant pandas of every age plus red pandas. Visitors walk shaded paths between outdoor enclosures, nursery houses where cubs are shown in season, and a panda museum. Mornings, when the bamboo goes out and the pandas are awake, are the whole point. Its breeding work helped turn captive giant pandas from a struggling population into one numbering in the hundreds, and pandas born here now live in zoos around the world.
