Cherokee National Forest
National Forest · Cleveland, Tennessee
655,000 acres along the North Carolina line, in two halves with Great Smoky Mountains National Park sitting between them. The southern half holds the Ocoee, the only natural river ever used for Olympic whitewater, and the roadside 90-foot drop of Bald River Falls; the northern half runs up to the Roan Highlands and the grassy balds. The Cherohala Skyway crosses 43 miles of it with no fuel, no food and no mobile signal, and unlike the national park next door, dogs are welcome on the trails.
2800 North Ocoee Street, Cleveland, Tennessee, 37312, United States
Open year round, free. Developed recreation areas are seasonal and some day-use sites charge a small parking fee. The Cherohala Skyway and high forest roads close for snow and ice. Ocoee whitewater runs only on the published TVA release schedule.
