Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel
Iconic Bridge · Cape Charles, Virginia
Seventeen and a half miles straight across the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, from Virginia Beach to the Eastern Shore — twelve miles of low trestle, high-level bridges, four man-made islands and two mile-long tunnels that dive under the shipping channels. The tunnels exist because the Navy would not accept a structure that could be dropped across the approach to Norfolk and bottle up the Atlantic Fleet. It opened in 1964 and was named one of the Seven Engineering Wonders of the Modern World the following year.
32386 Lankford Highway, Cape Charles, Virginia, 23310, United States
Open 24 hours a day, all year, as a toll crossing. Closes or restricts vehicle classes in high wind. Check cbbt.com for restrictions and for whether the island facility is open.
