Cheticamp and the Acadian Coast

The Centre Of Cape Breton'S Acadian Culture, With French Language Music, Hooked Rug Art, A Big Church, Whale Watching Boats And The Entrance To The Cabot Trail And The Highlands Park. A Busy Summer Village In An Acadian Pocket Of The Island · Cheticamp, Nova Scotia

Cheticamp is an Acadian fishing village on the west coast of Cape Breton Island, strung along the shore road just outside the western entrance to Cape Breton Highlands National Park. French is the language of the shops, the church and the kitchen, and the community's music, rug hooking and cooking have been kept alive for more than two centuries. The big Saint-Pierre church dominates the skyline, hooked-rug shops and a small museum show a craft that grew from kitchen floors into a trade, and boats leave the harbour for whales and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Cheticamp is also the western gateway to the Cabot Trail, with the national park visitor centre a few minutes north. It is busiest in July and August and during the Acadian festival, and quiet and mostly closed from late October to May. Plan to stay one night rather than just pass through, since evenings bring music, a quiet harbour and long sunsets over the water that day visitors miss. Cash and a few French phrases help in the smaller shops.

Cheticamp keeps summer hours more than year-round ones. The rug museum, craft shops, cafes and whale-watching desks are open roughly late May or June to mid-October, often about 9 to 5 or later in July and August, with shorter days at the shoulders - confirm by phone. The national park visitor centre keeps its own season and hours, roughly mid-May to late October. The village streets, harbour and church exterior are open at any hour. Many shops close on Sundays outside peak season, and from late October to May most visitor services shut or run reduced hours, so confirm before driving out.
