Cheyenne Bottoms
Ramsar Wetland Of International Importance · Great Bend, Kansas
A forty-one-thousand-acre marsh in a shallow land basin north-east of Great Bend, and the largest inland wetland in the United States. It sits at the narrow waist of the Central Flyway, which means something close to half the shorebird population of North America passes through it in spring — a concentration that earned it designation as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention and a place in the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network. In late April there are days here that birders plan years around.
592 NE K-156 Highway, Great Bend, Kansas, 67530, United States
FREE and open daily, dawn to dusk, with the dyke and pool roads open to vehicles. The Kansas Wetlands Education Center is free and keeps its own daytime hours. Water levels vary with the season and the year and can be low in drought — check conditions before travelling. Waterfowl hunting is a managed use in autumn and changes access.
