Chicago History Museum

History Museum · Chicago, Illinois

Founded in 1856 as the Chicago Historical Society, which makes it one of the oldest institutions in the city — and which is why it lost its entire collection in the Great Fire of 1871 and had to begin again from nothing. It now holds some twenty-two million objects and documents at the southern edge of Lincoln Park, and it is the place that explains the fire, the 1893 World's Fair, the stockyards and 1968 to anyone who wants the city rather than its skyline.

1601 North Clark Street, Chicago, Illinois, 60614, United States

Generally daily, roughly 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM with a later Tuesday opening. Free for under-18s. Illinois-resident free days published annually.
