Chicago Theatre
Theater · Chicago, Illinois
A 1921 movie palace on State Street by the theatre architects Rapp and Rapp, built in French Baroque revival for the Balaban and Katz cinema chain and saved from demolition in the 1980s. Its six-storey vertical marquee spelling CHICAGO is one of the most recognised objects in the city and a registered trademark, and the auditorium behind it is a 3,600-seat gilt confection modelled loosely on the Paris Opera. It works today as a touring concert and comedy house.
