Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station
History Museum · Rodanthe, North Carolina
The most complete surviving Life-Saving Service station complex in the United States, on Hatteras Island at Rodanthe, built in 1874 and staffed by surfmen who rowed into the surf after wrecks on the Graveyard of the Atlantic. Its crew carried out the 1918 rescue of the torpedoed British tanker Mirlo, one of the most celebrated rescues in the service's history. In summer the museum re-enacts the beach apparatus drill with the original equipment.

SEASONAL - generally open Monday to Friday from spring through autumn, roughly late morning to mid-afternoon, and CLOSED FOR MUCH OF THE WINTER. Ticketed. ⚠ THE LIVE BEACH APPARATUS DRILL, the reason to time a visit, runs on a posted summer schedule - check before travelling, because without it this is a good museum rather than a memorable one.
