Chichén Itzá
Zona ArqueolóGica (INAH) · Tinúm, Yucatán
The great Maya-Toltec city of the northern Yucatan and the most visited archaeological site in Mexico, with about 2.2 million visitors in 2024. El Castillo, the stepped pyramid at its centre, is built as a calendar: 91 steps on each of four staircases plus the top platform make 365, and at the spring and autumn equinoxes the late afternoon sun throws a serrated shadow down the northern balustrade that reads as a serpent descending. Around it stand the largest ball court in Mesoamerica, the Caracol observatory, the Temple of the Warriors with its Group of a Thousand Columns, and the Cenote Sagrado, the sinkhole into which offerings were thrown. UNESCO inscribed it in 1988 and it became one of the New7Wonders in 2007. For planning: nothing can be climbed, shade is scarce, and the coaches from Cancun arrive by late morning. Be at the gate at opening, hire a licensed guide, carry pesos for two ticket windows, and finish with a cenote swim.
Carretera Federal 180, Zona Arqueológica, Tinúm, Yucatán, 97757, Mexico
Open daily, generally from early morning to late afternoon. ⚠ ARRIVE AT OPENING - the tour coaches from Cancún and Mérida arrive mid-morning and by eleven the site is both crowded and punishingly hot. ⚠ THERE ARE TWO SEPARATE ADMISSION CHARGES, a federal INAH fee and a Yucatán state fee, collected at different windows; bring pesos in cash and expect the second window. Parking is charged separately. LICENSED GUIDES ARE AVAILABLE AT THE ENTRANCE and are strongly recommended because there is almost no interpretation on site. ⚠ CLIMBING EL CASTILLO AND THE OTHER STRUCTURES IS PROHIBITED AND ENFORCED - access was closed years ago for conservation and after a fatal fall, and climbers are detained and fined. Interior chambers are closed. ⚠ TRIPODS AND PROFESSIONAL EQUIPMENT NEED AN INAH PERMIT AND DRONES ARE PROHIBITED without written authorisation. There is very little shade and Yucatán heat and humidity are severe from March to September - bring far more water than you expect to need.
