Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park

National Military Park · Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia

The first and the largest national military park in the United States, established by Congress in 1890 by veterans of both armies who wanted the ground preserved while they were still alive to mark it. The Georgia battlefield at Chickamauga covers some five thousand acres of the September 1863 fighting — the second-bloodiest battle of the Civil War after Gettysburg, and a Confederate victory that trapped the Union army in Chattanooga. The park also holds smaller units across the state line in Tennessee, but the centre of gravity is here, and it is free.

3370 Lafayette Road, Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, 30742, United States

Battlefield grounds and the auto tour open daily, dawn to dusk, free. Visitor centre generally 8:30 to 17:00; closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Ranger programmes run on a seasonal schedule, heaviest in summer and around the September anniversary. The Tennessee units, including Point Park on Lookout Mountain, keep their own hours and Point Park charges a small fee.
