Chief Joseph Scenic Byway

Wyoming Scenic Byway · Cody, Wyoming

About 47 paved miles of Wyoming Highway 296 from WY 120 north of Cody, over Dead Indian Pass and through Sunlight Basin, to US 212 near the Montana line, where it meets the Beartooth Highway and the road to Yellowstone's Northeast Entrance. It follows part of the route of the Nez Perce people who fled the US Army under Chief Joseph in 1877. Switchbacks climb to an overlook on Dead Indian Pass across the Absaroka Range; beyond, the Sunlight Creek Bridge spans a narrow gorge, and the road runs beside the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone, Wyoming's first federally designated Wild and Scenic River. Services are almost non-existent.
