The "Forty Steps": a steep rock-cut stairway climbing a spur of the Qaitul ridge west of Kandahar city to a small chamber carved in the 16th century on the order of the first Mughal emperor Babur — its walls carrying Persian inscriptions recording Mughal dominion, guarded by carved stone felines. From the chamber mouth, the view runs across Kandahar's orchards and the old city that Ahmad Shah Durrani built. It is the ancient south's most visitable monument: a short, sweating climb, an emperor's graffiti in the imperial manner, and the heartland of Afghan history at your feet.
