Chimborazo
The Highest Mountain In Ecuador And, Because Of The Equatorial Bulge, The Point On Earth'S Surface Farthest From The Earth'S Centre, Higher Than Everest By That Measure. Chimborazo Fauna Production Reserve (1987) Protects Vicuna Herds. Roads Reach About 5,000 M; The Summit Needs Mountaineering Skill. · Riobamba, Chimborazo
Chimborazo is a glaciated volcano of 6,263 m, the highest mountain in Ecuador. Because the Earth bulges at the equator, its summit is the point on the surface farthest from the centre of the planet, about 2 km beyond the summit of Everest, though Everest remains the highest above sea level. The Chimborazo Fauna Production Reserve protects the slopes, and a paved road climbs through cold, open paramo where reintroduced vicunas and wild llamas graze to the Carrel refuge at about 4,800 m. A walk of about an hour leads up to the Whymper refuge at about 5,000 m. The honest picture is a high, cold, windy place. Altitude sickness is real, clouds often cover the summit by midday, and the summit itself is a technical ascent for trained climbers with a certified guide. Go early, dress warmly, and take the day slowly. Most visitors come from Riobamba or Quito, spend a few hours at the refuges, and leave before the afternoon cloud and cold arrive. Warm clothes matter more than most people expect, even on a sunny day in the dry months.

The reserve is open every day, and the road to the refuges is usable in daylight, with the clearest views in the early morning. Entry is usually paid at the gate and the refuges keep their own hours. Weather can close the upper road or the walking path at short notice. Climbing the summit is possible only with a guide. Confirm conditions locally.
