Chimelong Ocean Kingdom
Part Of The Chimelong Ocean Resort On Hengqin Island; National 5A Tourist Attraction · Zhuhai, Guangdong
A vast marine theme park on Hengqin island in Zhuhai, across the water from Macau, built around one of the largest aquariums in the world and opened in 2014 as the centrepiece of the Chimelong Ocean Resort. Its record-setting tanks hold whale sharks, manta rays and shoals of tuna behind an acrylic viewing window so big that visitors stand in front of it as if before a cinema screen, and a domed underwater tunnel lets crowds walk beneath the fish. Themed zones lead from a polar hall of belugas, walruses and penguins to a rainforest of otters and river fish, a jellyfish gallery lit like a light show, and a dolphin cove; between them are roller coasters, carousels and children's rides, so the park works as both aquarium and funfair. Parades fill the streets in the afternoon, and after dark a fountain, laser and firework show plays over the central lake. The scale and the breeding records draw millions of visitors a year, while the keeping of whale sharks and belugas has drawn criticism from marine conservation groups. Hotels, a circus and a second indoor park sit alongside, and Macau and the bridge to Hong Kong are close by.
