Chinati Foundation

Art Museum · Marfa, Texas

A contemporary art museum on the 340-acre site of Fort D. A. Russell, a decommissioned cavalry post outside Marfa, founded by Donald Judd to house permanent large-scale installations in the buildings and landscape they were made for. Judd's hundred works in mill aluminum fill two artillery sheds he reglazed himself; Dan Flavin's fluorescent installation occupies six former barracks; the collection runs across twenty-one buildings and the desert between them.

1 Cavalry Row, Marfa, Texas, 79843, United States

Wed-Sun 9 AM - 5 PM, final entry 4 PM. CLOSED MONDAY AND TUESDAY. Guided tours are the only way to see most of the collection and they sell out — book ahead at chinati.org. Judd's 15 untitled works in concrete are FREE and self-guided during museum hours with no reservation.
