Chinatown

Heritage District · New York, New York

The Manhattan neighbourhood around Mott, Canal and Bayard Streets, settled from the 1870s and shaped by the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 — which barred Chinese immigration for sixty-one years and forced the community into a small, self-contained and legally besieged few blocks. ⚠ IT IS NO LONGER NEW YORK'S LARGEST CHINESE NEIGHBOURHOOD; Flushing and Sunset Park are both bigger. It remains the oldest and the most historically dense.

Canal Street at Mott Street, New York, New York, 10013, United States

An open neighbourhood — free, no gate, no hours. Shops and restaurants keep their own hours and MANY CLOSE EARLIER THAN THE REST OF MANHATTAN, with the neighbourhood quietening noticeably after about 9 p.m. Columbus Park is a city park open daily and is at its best between 7 and 9 a.m. The Mahayana Buddhist Temple on Canal Street is free. ⚠ THE LUNAR NEW YEAR PARADE AND FIRECRACKER CEREMONY, in late January or February depending on the lunar calendar, closes the streets and draws enormous crowds.
