Chincoteague Island
Island · Chincoteague, Virginia
A working watermen's town on the Virginia end of the Eastern Shore, with a barrier island of wild ponies and undeveloped Atlantic beach behind it in Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Marguerite Henry's Misty of Chincoteague made the ponies famous across the country in 1947, and the herd still swims the channel every July in a round-up run by the town's volunteer fire company.

Town open year round. Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge generally opens around dawn and closes at dusk with seasonal variation, and charges a vehicle entrance fee. Beach lifeguards in summer only. The Pony Swim is traditionally the last Wednesday in July.
