Chino Hills State Park

State Park · Chino Hills, California

Chino Hills State Park protects a large block of open hills in the Puente-Chino Hills, where Orange, Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Riverside Counties meet, close to Brea, Yorba Linda and Chino Hills. It is often described as one of the last wild corridors linking the Santa Ana Mountains to the Puente Hills, and it feels surprisingly remote given the freeways and subdivisions on every side. The land is rolling grassland cut by canyons, with oak and sycamore woodland along the creeks. Trails serve hikers, mountain bikers and horse riders - confirm which routes allow which use. Spring brings green slopes and wildflowers; summer is hot, dry and golden, with almost no shade. Rattlesnakes, ticks and coyotes are part of the experience, mountain lions are possible, and wildfire can close the park. It suits people who want a long, quiet outing close to Los Angeles and Orange County, not a quick scenic stop.

California State Parks has generally opened the park for day use from early morning until around sunset, with the entrance and visitor centre areas following their own schedule - confirm the current hours, which gates are open, and whether a kiosk or ranger is staffed on the day you go. The park has more than one entrance on different sides of the hills, so check which one suits your trail before you drive. In summer the sensible hours are the first two or three after sunrise; by midday the open slopes are punishing. Winter days are mild but short. Gates can be locked at closing, so do not linger past dusk with your car inside. Red flag days, high fire danger and storms can close the park without much notice, so check the State Parks page and any park alert before leaving home.
