The Mastic Island: The Medieval Mastic Villages Of The South, The Black Pebble Beach Of Mavra Volia, And Nea Moni Monastery (UNESCO, With Daphni And Hosios Loukas, 1990) · Chios, North Aegean

Chios is a large island in the north-east Aegean, a few kilometres off the Turkish coast, and it is the only place in the world where mastic, the aromatic resin of a particular variety of lentisk tree, is produced on a commercial scale. The wealth from mastic built the fortified medieval mastic villages of the south - Pyrgi with its black and white sgraffito facades, the stone labyrinth of Mesta and tower-centred Olympi - and the know-how of cultivating it is on UNESCO's intangible heritage list. In the hills west of the capital, the eleventh-century monastery of Nea Moni holds mosaics that are part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing with Daphni and Hosios Loukas. Add the black-pebble beach of Mavra Volia, the walled citrus estates of Kambos and a proud seafaring town. It suits travellers who want Greece with few foreign tourists and strong local life. Honest caveats: you need a car, distances are long, ferries from Piraeus take most of a day, and the June 2025 wildfire left burnt hillsides in the centre and north.

The island and its villages are open all year and free to wander. Nea Moni is a working monastery, generally open daily in the morning and again later in the afternoon, closed for a midday break - confirm hours and what is visible under restoration. The Chios Mastic Museum near Pyrgi keeps its own seasonal hours with a weekly closing day (confirm), and state museums in Chios Town follow the usual longer summer and shorter winter hours, closed on the main public holidays. Ferries run from Piraeus (roughly 7-9 hours, often overnight) and on the north Aegean line via Lesvos; flights from Athens take under an hour. Book ferry cabins and cars for August and Easter well ahead; hire a car on arrival.
