Chiricahua National Monument

National Monument · Willcox, Arizona

A wonderland of rocks in the Chiricahua Mountains of south-east Arizona, where thousands of rhyolite pinnacles, balanced rocks and columns were left by a huge volcanic eruption about 27 million years ago and eroded into strange shapes. An eight-mile scenic road climbs Bonita Canyon to Massai Point, and a network of trails winds among the spires to Heart of Rocks and Big Balanced Rock. It is a sky island, where Mexican wildlife such as coatis meets the forests of the north. Faraway Ranch preserves the story of a pioneer family. It is remote and uncrowded. Most of the monument is designated wilderness, and it is one of the quieter parks in the Southwest.
